Dr.Narmadha daughter and disciple of Padmashri M. S. Gopalakrishnan, is a happy combination of a violinist, musicologist and a vocalist.

Dr. M Narmada has a Phd in music from Delhi University. Her doctoral thesis was aptly a comparison on North & South Indian music styles. Apart from her duet concerts with her father, she is a sought after accompanist to many leading Carnatic vocalists. She got trained under her grandfather Parur A. Sundaram Iyer and continues her training under her father. She has toured all over the world including countries like USA, UK, Holland, South Africa, Singapore, Malaysia, and Hongkong. She has been awarded the “Best Violinist” award by the Music Academy, Madras consecutively eight times. She received her doctoral degree from Delhi University as a U. G. C. fellow under the able guidance of Sitar virtuoso Prof. Debu Chaudhari and renowned musicologist Dr. K. G. Ginde. She has command over and flair for a number of languages like English, Sanskrit and French. Her articles have been widely published in international journals. She was trained as vocalist by her mother and Shri T. M. Tyagarajan. Her aim is to propagate the Parur-MSG style of Violin playing.

In her book "INDIAN MUSIC AND SANCARAS IN RAGAS", Dr.M.Narmadha analyses Raaga sanchara which depicts the beauty of every Raaga and brings out the essence of the Raaga system. Dr.M.Narmadha has brought out in remarkable capacities the study of 25 Karnatak Raagas with their corresponding Hindustani Raagas with of every practical illustrations.

Dr.M.Narmdha says, "it is the permutation and combination of swaras that give rise to these melodic phrases. The importance of UCCHAR (pronunciation) on every single note produce different tonal shades of the Raaga in different facets. Hindustani music depends on ucchar and sanchara for demonstrating the very life of every Raaga. Therefore the voice culture is very important and melody gains very great importance here and it therefore appeals straight to the heart."

Dr.M.Narmadha has won number of accolades for her Lecture demonstration on the varied topics of Indian Music. She is a versatile performer and equally a devoted teacher of vocal, violin and theory of Indian Music. She offers intensive coaching at Adyar Chennai with individualized attention starting from beginners onwards, students, connoisseurs and amateur performers to groom themselves to become performers in Hindustani and Karnatak Music for both the theory as well as practical aspects.
